Ruth Gonzales
Bio-Education-Exhibitions
Ruth Gonzales was born in Mexico and raised in Hermosillo, Sonora, Mexico.
Later, in 1990, she relocated to the United States. Her earliest artistic awakening began as a teen, inspired by Alfredo Sevilla, a Spanish painter from Seville who recognized her budding artistic leanings. He encouraged her to observe nature, draw from life, and listen to classical music as a way to feel and translate emotion — an influence that deeply shaped her path. While still living in Mexico, Gonzales continued to grow artistically. Her inspiration from the beaches of El Novillero, ocean life, and humid landscapes, further nurtured her lifelong focus on nature and its rhythmic patterns. All of which attributed to the evocative references to nature and landscape that she has come to be known for. She enjoys exploring textures, rhythms and the spiritual pulse of the natural world. All accomplished through her use of vibrant color and expressive brushwork.
From 1980 -1984, Gonzales studied the classics at the Academy Studies and further developed
her skills at the Academy of Bellas Artes UNISON at the University of Hermosillo, among other
classes . Her diligence toward mastering and refining her skills, led to further training from
1992 - 1994 at the College of the Desert in the Coachella Valley of Southern California.
From 1984 - 1990 she served as a volunteer missionary in rural communities across Mexico’s
western states. During these profoundly transformative years she stayed with the family of a
carpenter, his wife and seven daughters. He worked on canvases and stretchers for the artist
Vladimir Cora, a former student of Rufino Tamayo. Simultaneously, Gonzales absorbed the
legacy of Tamayo; through the experience, she came to terms with the universality of art.
Observing that even Tamayo’s work had been shaped by Picasso’s synthetic Cubism, simplified
forms, flat planes, and bold compositions. Even though they were reinterpreted with vibrant
color, texture, and a depth of Mexican sensibility, this new awareness enabled her to more fully
understand the relationship of Spain to Mexico; and Spain’s powerful influence across all the
globe.
Gonzales’ paintings have been curated into exhibitions consistently throughout her career.
However, one of the most memorable occurred in 2005 when her art was exhibited alongside
Pablo Picasso’s lithographs. The exhibition was celebrated at the Copal Gallery in Palm Desert.
That same year, her work was honored in an exhibition with Rufino Tamayo’s at the Ludwing
Gallery in Palm Springs. It is no surprise that her work has continued to expand and now
extends to large-scale paintings, dramatically revealing her interpretation of the dynamic
patterns of nature. Ruth Gonzales continues her art making as it began, with a fascination for
the timeless beauty and transformational force of our natural environment. She resides in
Cathredral City, California with her husband Edward, an engineer with a passion for astronomy
– and her lifetime mentor.EDUCATION
